Roselle, also known as Luoshen flower, nightshade and Sudan red, is an annual herb of hibiscus in Malvaceae family. It flowers in summer and autumn, with light yellow petals and purple red base. Roselle is native to Africa. It was planted in Sudan about 6000 years ago. It thrives in African countries south of the Sahara Desert and cannot be cultivated in the temperate zone. It was introduced to India and America in the 17th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia and other Asian countries planted rose eggplants to produce fiber, which are now widely cultivated in subtropical and tropical regions.
