What is quercetin

Quercetin, a flavonol, has another name: oak or quercetin, first discovered in 1936 by Hungarian physiologist(Szent Gyorgyi)because of its unique antioxidant properties. Thereby being used as the antioxidant quercetin.

This compound has a wide range of sources in nature, including but not limited to needle cherries, tea leaves, red onions, raspberries, cranberries, and other plants. In addition to these, quercetin is found in many vegetables and fruits, such as apples, berries, tomatoes, grapes, onions, etc., as well as some medicinal plants, such as ginkgo biloba, forsythia, etc.

Molecular structure

The molecular structure of the antioxidant quercetin is composed of multiple ring structures and a hydroxyl group, including three carbon atoms of C6-C3-C6 and a glucose unit connected to the hydroxyl group. It is precisely because of this special molecular structure that endows quercetin with powerful biological activities including anti-oxidation, anti-inflammatory,anti-allergy, and antiviral activities.
